Three Highland Park students win science scholarships, one advances to national contest

Highland Park High School junior Madeline Waggoner was named one of three regional winners from Texas in the Young Epidemiology Scholarship Competition for her project, "Correlation between Extreme Food Allergies in Infancy and Learning Disabilities." She will travel to Washington, D.C. this month to present her project and compete with 59 other students for scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $50,000.

Senior Sarah Glazer and junior Nick Burns were named semi-finalists and awarded $1,000 scholarships to the college of their choice. Sixty students nationwide received this honor.

HPHS teacher Roseanne Leediker required her 17 medical microbiology students to submit sophisticated research projects to the YES Competition, sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the College Board. The contest for original student research is designed to inspire talented students to investigate the many behavioral, biological, environmental and social factors that affect health and, based upon this knowledge, to identify ways to improve the health of the public.
