Seriously, kids, these are good tips.

This week, April 16 through April 20, some Fort Worth ISD students will take the TAKS tests. Parents can help make sure their children are well prepared for TAKS.

Here is a checklist of tips they can discuss with their children to ensure an anxiety-free testing environment.

  1. Get a good night's rest.
  2. Eat a healthy breakfast.
  3. Dress comfortably -- spring weather is unpredictable. Fort Worth ISD's standards of dress permit "the layered look," i.e. sweatshirts, cardigans and lightweight sweaters in navy and white.
  4. Picture yourself doing well. Say to yourself, "I can do this!" A positive attitude will help you score higher.
  5. If you feel nervous, close your eyes and breathe deeply to calm yourself.
  6. When you're finished, check your work for mistakes.
  7. Don't worry if other students finish before you -- a test is not a race. Take time to do your best.

Parents should make sure their children follow the first two guidelines -- get a good night's rest and eat a healthy breakfast -- on a consistent basis, not just during TAKS testing. These tips can go a long way in helping students do their best every day but especially during the testing period.
