By the hand of Rick Perry, Spurlock will soon occupy the most prestigious office an athletic trainer can have in Texas.

Keller ISD Assistant Director of Athletics, Becky Spurlock, was recently appointed to the State Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers by Governor Rick Perry.

Following this appointment, Spurlock will occupy the most prestigious office an athletic trainer can have in the state of Texas.

“I am very, very honored by this appointment,” said Spurlock. “It is a wonderful honor, and I’m very pleased to be recognized for my work as an athletic trainer.”

Spurlock joined the district in 1999 as the athletic trainer at Fossil Ridge High School and then served as the athletic coordinator at Fossil Ridge. In 2003, she was named the assistant director of athletics. Along with being the assistant director of athletics, Spurlock, who is a certified and licensed athletic trainer, is the director of athletic training for Keller ISD. She is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, as well as the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association and currently serves as the president of the Southwest Athletic Trainers’ Association. Spurlock received a bachelor’s degree in Health/Secondary Education from Baylor University.

In 1971, Texas became the first state to enact a law requiring athletic trainers to meet specific standards of education, professionalism and ethics. Individuals practicing in the state of Texas must be duly licensed by the State Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers. The State Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers, a division of the Texas Department of Health, was established to govern the athletic trainer to ensure the criteria is met by each applicant for licensure. The Advisory Board administers the licensure examination and regulates the standards by which athletic trainers are held accountable.

An athletic trainer works with the consent of a physician or other health care provider licensed to refer, for the prevention, evaluation, treatment and physical rehabilitation of a sport related injury or illness. The athletic trainers work in a variety of settings, including secondary schools, college/universities, clinics, hospitals and industrial/occupational settings. Athletic trainers are widely respected as the complete health care provider from prevention to return to activity.
