Dallas ISD students participating in the annual Common Cents fundraiser gathered $54,762 for local charities and nonprofit organizations.

Students at 58 schools took part in the fundraiser during the fall semester.

They presented checks in March to 38 nonprofit organizations in Dallas County, including the American Red Cross, Promise House, and Dallas Casa, for amounts ranging from $300 to $6,000.

Students at Kleberg and Esperanza “Hope” Medrano elementary schools led the way in fundraising, each school collecting about $4,000.

Since the beginning of the Common Cents program nine years ago, Dallas ISD students have raised $314,000.

Common Cents is a student-led coin collection campaign that encourages good citizenship and social responsibility in students.
