Police make poker raids at Dallas VFW and AmVets

Email Print Tell us your story Comments (4)

Dallas police have raided AmVets Post No. 106 on the 2300 block of Oates Drive and VFW Post No. 1837 on the 2300 block of Lakeland Drive to shut down illegal gambling at both locations. Police believe that the house was taking a cut of poker games happening at both locations thus making the games illegal. Police hope that the VFW poker raid will clean up a large chunk of the senior citizen related crime that has been plaguing Dallas for so long.

I heard through the grapevine that the fines were $165.00 for those who were playing.

I'm sure they don't want to really bust the VFW posts. Nobody gets shot or is doing drugs at the Vet posts. smh

I have a feeling that the DPD doesn't want anything to do with this stuff, but the directive is coming from outside the department at a higher level.

I'm sure they'd much rather be busting the drug dealers and thugs around I-30 and Dilido and John West.

Wow-- I have mixed feelings on this one. The Lakeland VFW ("Audies Place") has been on my radar screen for a long time. It's right down the street from me and I'd heard rumors that they were running slots as long ago as November. I had talked about running a Pegasus News sting report on the place, but relented partly because of time and partly because I thought it hypocritical, given my own penchant for poker.

Turns out that poker was the game that packed the parking lot late into the night, even on weeknights. I'm talking as many as 100 cars in a shopping center that was otherwise desolate.

Not sure if I'm more glad to see law enforcement active in my hood, or sorry that I missed the game.

These little illegal casinos are bell-weathers for a deteriorating community.

Over on Ferguson Rd., there are four strip malls. But instead of real stores, they're just full of bingo halls, lottery shops and game rooms.

You just can't sustain a community that way.
