Lamar Hunt Pioneer Cup raises $51,500 for Dallas SCORES
The full amount was donated to local youth organization Dallas SCORES prior to FC Dallas’ home-opener on Sunday, April 22.
The FC Dallas Foundation announced that net proceeds from the inaugural Lamar Hunt Pioneer Cup, a charity game played between FC Dallas and the Columbus Crew, totaled $51,500. The full amount was donated to local youth organization Dallas SCORES prior to FC Dallas’ home-opener on Sunday, April 22. The Lamar Hunt Pioneer Cup, which was played on March 11 at Pizza Hut Park, was created as a tribute to late owner of both teams Lamar Hunt, who passed away in December 2006 after a battle with cancer.
The FC Dallas Foundation presented a check to Dallas SCORES on behalf of the Hunt family that was accepted by Steve Christenson, Founding Board member for Dallas SCORES, Elsy Serpas, coach and teacher at Gilbert Cuellar Elementary, and fourth-grade students Tatiana Flores and Christopher Cruz.
"I can't think of two stronger partners than FC Dallas and the Hunt family,” said Christenson. “Dallas SCORES is truly honored to be chosen as the beneficiary of the inaugural Pioneer Cup and we look forward to building upon this relationship for years to come. This sizable contribution will go a long way towards helping us affect more lives within the DISD system."
The Pioneer Cup will be played in Columbus next year to benefit an organization of the Crew’s choice.
Dallas SCORES is a youth development program that uses a combination of soccer, creative writing and service-learning for students in a safe, constructive learning environment after school five days a week. Students that agree to make an equal commitment to creative writing workshops will participate in a soccer league, which will be re-named the Pioneer Soccer League in honor of Lamar Hunt.
