South Oak Cliff coach disciplined for leaving behind two athletes

Coach James Mays II left two of his athletes in Austin after the 5A state championship game.

After winning a third consecutive 5A state championship, South Oak Cliff seniors Michael Berry and Cornelius Dawson probably thought the following morning they'd be cruising home on the team bus, basking in the glow of victory with their teammates.

Instead, the duo hitched a ride with a former coach after the Golden Bears' head coach, John Mays II left them at the hotel. Don't feel too bad for the pair, instead of obeying their coach's orders to stay in the hotel after the game, Berry and Dawson stayed in by going out at Austin's Sixth Street until 4:30 a.m.

Kudos to coach Mays. Nothing like consequences for disrespect.

These kids really lucked out they could've been arrested or in a club fight and Coach Mays would've taken all of the heat.

Shawn Williams, says:

this was old school discipline from an old school coach. he tried to get in contact with the students and they intentionally disobeyed his urging of them to come back to the hotel. kids today know that there are basically no consequences to their actions.
