UPDATED: Byron Nelson golf tourney has magical, happy outcome
IRVING The ecstatic winner of the EDS Byron Nelson Championship on Sunday was Scott Verplank, a Dallas native, OSU grad, and PGA tour competitor who began working with Nelson 26 years ago, while still in his teens.
According to the FWST, Verplank pumped his fist toward the heavens and mouthed the words thank you -- "acknowledging an invisible assist" he thought he sensed from the deceased founder of the event. He also says that when he walked off the course, he felt a cool breeze -- even though it wasn't cool out there. Ooky-spooky.
He ended with a score of 66, 13 under par.
We originally pegged Verplank as an SMU grad, confusing him with this fellow. Thanks to fellow OSU-er Eric Celeste for setting us straight.
