Does Denton warrant a story about its current music scene?
DENTON Is there any particular point to this recap of the Denton music scene? Does it ask a bunch of questions it doesn't answer? Are questions an annoying way to begin a story? Does it seem odd that it took two writers to write it? Does it use classic-newspaper phrases like "some would say," as in "There are some who would say that Denton, home to an estimated 104,000 people and three universities, including the well-regarded University of North Texas with its acclaimed music department, already has a national reputation as a music mecca"? (Is there anyone who would not say that?) Does the story interview the seemingly-obligatory Will Johnson, even though he hasn't lived in Denton for more than five years? Is it nice to see a story about Denton, even if it has no news peg to speak of?

As the co-author of the story in question, a couple of points of clarification:
1) Unfortunately, for whatever reason, only the sidebars of the Denton scene story got posted on the web site though they were the focal point of the print version. As a reader, I would completely agree with you if I'd only been able to see the sidebars. You're not seeing the entire main story which featured interviews with Midlake, Robert Gomez, Fishboy, Vortexas and Bryce Isbell, five current Denton acts that seem to be somewhat representative of what's going on.
2) The peg is the success Midlake is enjoying on the indie scene in the U.S. and especially in the UK where, a couple of weeks ago, they sold out London's Shepherd's Bush Empire. Concurrently, there have been many stories in the British music press about the Denton scene.
3) This isn't the first time we've written major takes on some of these acts. We did a large Midlake profile when "The Trials of Van Occupanther" came out last year. More recently, a Gomez profile ran.
4) And it was mentioned very prominently in the story that Will Johnson hasn't lived in Denton in several years. But he was an integral part of the scene for a long time.
Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Thanks for letting us know, Cary. That makes a lot more sense.
But y'all still print a newspaper?! Wow. Who knew?
As long as newspaper companies aren't publishing web-to-print instead of the inverse, things like this are going to happen.
