UPDATED: J.J. Abrams mystery film set photos appear online

New location shooting: Central Park.

UPDATES appear at article's end.

I've been waiting for something substantial to pop up regarding the Cloverfield/1-18-08 J.J. Abrams movie project, and now that such has appeared, here's the latest:

Gothamist has published photos of the location set, which took over a block of New York's Orchard Street (between Stanton and Rivington) and turned it (cosmetically) into the sort of devastated zone that 9/11 survivors probably recall all too well. More pics of the special effects destruction can be found here, but be warned: what they've done to that BMW is enough to bring tears to German automobile fanciers everywhere.

In other news, speculation is rife that the title of the movie may turn out to be "Overnight," given that attorneys employed by Abrams have recently registered that moniker as a trademark.

A fifth photo has appeared on the 1-18-08 website but it's more a cause for frustration than enlightenment, since it reverts in time back to 12:04 a.m., before the monstrous carnage begins; it depicts three revelers mugging the camera from behind a plastic cup which presumably contains some form of high-octane potable, blissfully unaware of the mayhem about to ensue.

And finally, the website IESB.net ("The Movie Reporter") has posted "spy footage" of action purportedly chronicling the filming of the movie itself. Pretty interesting stuff, showing guys in white lab coats and people being shuttled in somewhere (A hospital? A medical research facility?) by Huey chopper. Looks ominous.

UPDATE - 8/7/07:

With Cloverfield/1-18-08/"Cheese" camera crews filming this Monday (Aug. 6) in such a high-profile location as Central Park, attempts to camouflage the production as being a shoot for a cheese commercial did little to fake out the independent correspondent calling him/herself nooneimportant77; that worthy individual simply nodded to the production bloke who told him/her to be quiet and carried on filming/photographing the distant set action.

The resulting photos and video clips are posted at slashfilm.com.

Some of the reader comments are rich, such as the one posted by the chap who thinks he sees a monster behind a couple of the actors; that guy should apply for a job with Homeland Security.

I'll post further set reports and other Cloverfield news as they become available.
