City of Coppell Animal Shelter wants to guilt-trip you into adopting a kitten

Within the city's bi-weekly newsletter, the Coppell Animal Shelter regularly posts sympathetic pleas with citizens to adopt whatever animals they happen to have lying around.

Personally, I am appalled by the animal shel—oooh, my goodness, look at that little thing! Those fuzzy little ears! How much?!

Personally, I am appalled by the animal shel—oooh, my goodness, look at that little thing! Those fuzzy little ears! How much?!

But this week, the group has resorted to a new low with its melodramatic appeals and sappy wording:

"When you adopt from a shelter, you immediately save a life and have a devoted friend for life. Your new pet will love you regardless of all other factors. Where else can you get that kind of devotion?"

The letter goes on:

"Animal Services has 9 soft & cuddly kittens! These kittens and their mother were brought to us 6 weeks ago as strays. The kittens were only a few days old when they came to the shelter. They are now thriving, energetic and needing good homes."

"Their adoption fee is $20. All vaccinations and the spay / neuter must be completed within 5 months of the adoption. SNYP coupons and low cost clinic information available."

Devoted friend for life, my ass. Last time I had a "devoted friend for life", she would spend her nights jumping up and clawing my feet while I slept.

I really dont see anything wrong with tugging on the heart strings when it comes to saving an animals life. Good for Coppell. Check out http://PETFINDER.com for a good source of animals ready for adoption. In Hickory Creek we have 3 great dogs; white and brown labs. Chris Gordon

Yeah... adopt a kitten. I have. More than once. Spay, neuter, immunize, register with city... I'm still on board with all that, of course! But DON'T plan on letting them outside or you will get a citation. I speak from much experience, and my cats (2) are indoor cats (i.e. sleep 99.9% of the time under my bed). You will be cited for having "animals at large" (means my 5 lb cat pooped in your huge flower bed - and even covered it up!) and receive a scolding. You will be warned in highly dramatic fashion about the coyotes who are plotting (like Wylie) to seek and destroy your innocent, defenseless ball of fluff. Beep Beep! Of course, they can be let outside if you are there to "supervise" them (huh?) or IF THEY ARE ON A LEASH... oh, don't get me started on leash laws. Soon unleashed birds won't be allowed to fly overhead in Coppell airspace - droppings on the cars! The sidewalks! And God forbid, the trampolines! So yeah, adopt from a shelter... just don't plan to let that cat see Coppell on the outside.

Saturday Tastings in the Wine and Beer Department Little Joey just LOVES the Saturday wine tastings at Central Market - he particularly likes the blind tastings, when he can sneak a snort while Mommie's not looking. (Great nose!) More info
