SMU in “cautious” mode on Monday after finding cryptic message carved into desk
DALLAS As an extra precaution, SMU shared the following information with the campus community:
On April 23, 2007, in a classroom on campus, a message was found scrawled on a desk saying someone was going to "shoot up" SMU on "8-6-07" -- numbers that could refer to either August 6th (M/D/Y) or June 8th (D/M/Y) depending on the date convention, domestic or international. Although an investigation revealed no more specifics, and the actual threat level is considered low, SMU is providing this information as a precaution.
SMU will remain open, and scheduled activities will proceed as usual although campus and local law enforcement measures will be enhanced. But the following are some precautions that should be taken under any circumstaces as part of one's normal routine, but we issue this as a reminder in view of the current situation:
- Be especially vigilant of your surroundings
- Report any suspicious persons or activity immediately
- Report sighting of any weapon immediately
- Report people wearing clothing not consistent with weather conditions
- Be aware of unfamiliar persons or visitors to your office/lab, etc.
- Take time to learn the lockdown and evacuation plans in your building
Hmmm, June 8 or August 6, June 8 or August 6? Obviously, if it's any day, it must be August 6, since June 8 has come and gone with no shoot up.
Meanwhile, the school has not yet decided whether it will take seriously the OTHER message found carved into the desk: "Def Lepp rules!"
