Texas State Fair is coming and must therefore launder Big Tex’s clothes

Email Print Tell us your story Comment

— Big Tex, the icon for the annual Texas State Fair, is getting his clothes cleaned, the story of which represents a savvy manipulation of editorial space on the part of the State Fair's marketing department.

The story follows the fair's special-events coordinator who's described as taking the clothes to the cleaner in the spring and picking them up "about a month before the fair starts". Then the story runs through faux details, such as the fact that "the clothes are washed in a big washer with cool water and low-alkaline soap to prevent fading and running of the red, white and blue colors." And that the fee is $600. Which seems like a big bill except that the fair -- which, in case you missed it, is coming in about a month -- just got this ad totally for free.
