Texas State Fair is coming and must therefore launder Big Tex’s clothes
DALLAS Big Tex, the icon for the annual Texas State Fair, is getting his clothes cleaned, the story of which represents a savvy manipulation of editorial space on the part of the State Fair's marketing department.
The story follows the fair's special-events coordinator who's described as taking the clothes to the cleaner in the spring and picking them up "about a month before the fair starts". Then the story runs through faux details, such as the fact that "the clothes are washed in a big washer with cool water and low-alkaline soap to prevent fading and running of the red, white and blue colors." And that the fee is $600. Which seems like a big bill except that the fair -- which, in case you missed it, is coming in about a month -- just got this ad totally for free.
