DALLAS Alternet highlights a story by Automotive News about radio personalities being wooed by GM. The car company doesn't pay the talk jocks directly but buys ads and gives them new cars and trucks to drive. A spokesman says that GM contacted 17 radio hosts and personalities -- including two in Dallas:
Atom Smasher, a modestly named Dallas disc jockey, was positively oozing on the air: "I am driving around in this Cadillac, and I am not going to want to give it back - the Cadillac SRX…. To all the guys at GM: Good job."
His crosstown colleague, Chris Ryan, might as well have been crossing over to his advertising buddies and doing the ad. But this was not ad time. This was program time when he declared: "Have you seen all the cool things that's going on at GM? I have. If you're thinking about a new car, you got to look at GM."
Actually, as DJs go, there are a lot worse out there than these two guys. If you see them, ask them how their Envoys are.

Absolutely nothing new here. DJs have been doing this for years. I remember when a morning show producer friend of mine and her entire on-air talent pool were all gushing about a certain weight loss product. The gushing stopped when the FDA stepped in a pulled the product since folks were dropping like flies from using it. Isn't Lone Star radio selling out entire blocks of programming for infomercials? A Dallas VW dealer was handing over car keys to some radio folk just not too long ago.
