"C'mon, kids, let's have some fun!"

— After a mysterious fire at an elementary school playground last week, Arlington is going to replace the wood chips found at 35 playgrounds.

The fire was a result of spontaneous combustion; surveillance video showed that nobody started the thing.

The fire marshal said that the circumstances -- in which the wood chips got decomposed by the rain, then heated up in the sun -- were like a "perfect storm."

The fire caused $35,000 in damage, so now they'll be replaced with pea gravel, which will cost the school district $200,000.

Kids with pea gravel? I guarantee you there will be more children injured by flying pea gravel this year, than by spontaneous playground combustion.

Funny, because IIRC, many of Arlington's public parks just made the switch from gravel to this quasi-mulch just a year or two ago...

Goodbye frying pan. A toast to the inefficiencies of bureaucracy!
