Dallas Observer Winners announced
The Dallas Observer winners were announced, obviously, since the ceremony was last night. But you really don't need to see the list. It's as expected and made up of mostly the same people and associations that won the previous year. Not to say that those people aren't talented, because they are, but come on. There are so many artists and bands that have been completely ignored that it seems to remove some of the accomplishment associated with the awards. How did Emily Elbert not get nominated for anything? What about The Demigs, whose recent album is an experiment in pop awesomeness?
Now that I've gotten that off my chest, I just want to highlight some of the artists who won but don't fit as neatly into the prototypical mold of a Dallas Observer Award winner.
Best Experimental/Electronica: The Paper Chase
Best Metal: Fair to Midland (metal?)
Best Latin/Tejano: Mad Mexicans
Best Music Website/Blog: Gorilla Vs Bear
Again, I think that everyone nominated is incredibly talented. If only the ballot were more diverse, the win would carry the appropriate weight and be less of a Dallas music "circle jerk."

You are soooo right about The Demigs. Hey, I just wrote them in in nearly every category.

Personally, I gotta say, Sarah Jaffe is one talented singer, songwriter, guitar player. And she's a really fun and humble person. i was really glad to see her win especially. I was disappointed that Doug Burr didn't get recognized because I feel exactly the same about him. Very good musician. I hope there's a category next year for old dudes who dig good music, I think I'm a shoo in.

Bill, you are absolutely right about Sarah Jaffe, she is incredibly talented. She was also a great interview. I hope people understand that I'm not trying to say the winners weren't deserving, I would just prefer more diversity in the people nominated. Hopefully that point got across.
