Theater Review: Vodka and Kisses

It’s always exciting to go and see what a small theater company has to offer, especially one dedicated to presenting new works. Last weekend, MBS Productions opened the world premiere of Vodka and Kisses, a new play written by Travis Mayo, an area high school student.

At first I was surprised to find out that a high school student had written a play with vodka as a central motif. I mean what does a teenager know about drinking? But the underlying themes of the play are universal -- learning to accept one’s self and those around you for who they truly are.

The play itself is the story of two best friends/roommates whose friendship is ripped apart by Jo’s decision to get married to a guy that Sabrina does not approve of. As their relationship dissolves Sabrina replaces Jo with her new best friend Vodka and Jo becomes increasingly committed to her wedding plans. From here, the two friends explore the meaning of love and friendship and learn to accept themselves and each other.

The two lead actresses, Sabrina and Jo, were a great fit for this Odd Couple-esque coming of age tale. Sabrina (Angel Davis) drove the play and handled the emotional range of her character as well as she held her liquor (in fact the copious amounts of straight vodka consumed in this play made me cancel my post-show drink plans!). Jo (Jessica Renee Russell) was the perfect antithesis to Sabrina, whose upbeat attitude and prohibitionist sympathies brought refreshing moments to all the drama, depression, and cat-fights. Andrew (Cyrus Moshrefi), gave a great comedic performance enhanced by the many sardonic slogans displayed on his t-shirt and also managed to give his frat-daddy character some depth. Jo’s fiancé William (Jon Mark Howeth), seemed a bit one-dimensional to me and I couldn’t help seeing him as Sabrina does -- like a douche bag.

The set was lively and intimate and utilized the venue perfectly. I felt like I was sitting inside Jo and Sabrina’s apartment with them which increased my attachment to the characters. I felt the passage of time was unclear and would not have realized the play takes place over the course of a week if the program had not clued me in.

Overall the play was highly enjoyable, fun, and sweet. MBS Productions has produced a show which gives a personal experience- making the audience feel included in the show. Vodka and Kisses runs through August 25th at the Stone Cottage Theatre at the Addison Theatre Center. Ticket prices range from $16- $21.
