Texan Republicans to hold straw-poll confab in Fort Worth on Sept. 1

0

— The Republicans of Texas are throwing themselves a fancy-sounding Republican Straw Poll Townhall Convention on September 1, to get a gauge on who should be the GOP candidate and re-energize the Republican party.

At the same time, protestors are going to hold a rally, called "American People's Poll on Iraq - Texas Townhall," that's expected to draw 5,000 protesters from across the nation, including parents of troops who died in war, and Iraq veterans opposed to the war. The block of Main Street between Eighth and Ninth streets has been set aside for protests. Will there be more protestors than Republicans?

The story in the FWST says that at least three candidates don't plan to attend, and the most important three at that: Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, and John McCain. The lack of name brands is causing one of the sponsors, Lockheed Martin, to reconsider funding the thing. Other choice bits of data: 1. an explanation of "straw poll" and 2. that the name of the communications and political director for the Texas Republican Party is Hans Klingler.

For specifics on the protest action, representing a coalition of non-partisan groups under the umbrella sponsorship of Texans for Peace, hit this site.
