Lewisville Council holds special meeting Aug. 27 on possible non-smoking election

7

— Lewisville restaurants and bars take notice! Lewisville City Council will hold a special meeting on Monday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. in the counsel chambers of Lewisville City Hall to discuss a possible November election to ban smoking at local restaurants and bars.

Consider possible ordinance and ballot language, consider calling a Nov. 6 election, and consider contracting with Denton County to conduct the election are on the items on the agenda.

On Aug. 20, the council voted 4-1 to hold the special meeting. Current ordinance prohibits smoking in public libraries and museums, city-owned meeting rooms, theaters and stadiums, public elevators, retail stores, and designated nonsmoking areas of restaurants.

Are the restaurants and bars to "take notice" because they need to be alarmed about this? Really, does anyone think people will stop going out to eat at restaurants if they can't smoke during one simple meal? Wow... talk about being imprisoned by an addiction.

Bars is really probably another story. Though to be honest, I'd like to see the smoke go away.

A smokeless environment

I believe that non-smokers, like anyone else, have this right. But how far does that right extend?

Should it take priority over someone else's rights? Court houses, publicly owned buildings and anywhere else an individual might be forced to go should properly be included in any smoking law. What should not be included are places located in or on private property, providing an individual is not compelled by necessity or law, to frequent or work at that specific location.

If an Indian or Pakistani themed restaurant wants to "stink up (their) place" by burning incense, I think they should have that right. Even if I LOVE Pakistani food and HATE incense, they should have that right.

The only question then becomes one of health and anyone who goes to

and downloads the booklet there will see clearly how much we've been lied to by the antismoking lobby in that regard.

I'd also recommend that any Lewisville businesses that are wondering about the impact of a ban should download a copy, print out multiples, and distribute them to their staff and patrons.

Nothing is Risk-Free. It is the AMOUNT of Risk one needs to know.

EVEN AT PRESENT LEVELS

SECOND HAND SMOKE IS NOT A STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT HEALTH RISK

THE POISON IS IN THE DOSE

1 milligram = 1/1000th of 1 gram 1 gram = 1/1000th of 1 kilogram

Smoker - 700 milligrams per day

Car - 2.2 MILLION milligrams PER DAY

The Car is about 1800 times WORSE than the Smoker, and, there's a hell of a lot more Cars than Smokers too.

Compared to it's 1960s ancestor - today's Car is a 26 % Reduced Risk Product accepted by society

61 % Reduced Risk Cigarettes are about 2900 times LESS Risk than Cars.

Either also BAN Reduced Risk Cars

or also accept Reduced Risk Cigarettes

More of the same justification for addiction. If smoking is so great, do it at home.

Incense doesn't smell like butt, which is the problem with cigarettes. Is it ok to go to your neighborhood bar and defecate on someone's face - a right, perhaps? Yet, smokers seem to think they have the 'right' to foul up everyone else around them to support their habit.

Steve - I don't think most people are thinking about risk. I think most are thinking about comfort, particularly when they are going out to spend money. Reduced Risk Cigarettes (however you define it) still smell bad to the average non-smoker.

If there's "a hell of a lot more cars than smokers" - your words - then that must mean there are a hell of a lot more non-smokers than smokers. And while they are not telling you to stop smoking (at least I'm not - you are an adult) they at least want you to do it in a place that does not affect their comfort. Really, it's polite behavior. I have never been rude to a smoker or asked anyone to put out a cigarette in my life. But the days of "mind if I smoke?" are long gone. I don't think I've ever been asked that.
