Cross-dressing teen registers at Dallas school
After being sent home for wearing skirt, the student returned dawning capris pants.
A male student who "dresses like a female" was allowed to register at Sunset High School in Oak Cliff Wednesday, but was later sent home after a school official discovered he was a boy in girl's clothing.
Apparently, the threat level has been raised from "yellow" to "chartreuse."

The article linked quotes the student: "I'm going to school how I feel comfortable in". Hope they take the school part of this issue more seriously than the clothes.
Calls to mind the Miss Teen USA contestant from South Carolina. Except she's really a girl.

Are you kidding me? Kids who didn't crossdress would get torn to shreds for what they were wearing when I went to school. Is Oak Cliff the world's most tolerant place, or is Luis so deep in denial he's going to need CPR?

Are you kidding me? The last time I was there was because my car was overheating, and the engine was about to explode.
I stopped just long enough to make sure that when the engine blew, I'd still have enough speed to coast on through to somewhere safe.

What's the big deal. Whatever the kid wears, he needs to be educated.

In Oak Cliff, I think it's for the kid's general well-being that he not be allowed to wear skirts to school. Aside from that, I concur.

Okay, I'll say up front I'm assuming a lot here, but, If you don't let him wear what he wants, he'll simply learn what he probably already knows; adults won't let him do certain things.
If he is allowed to do his thing, and is confronted by his peers, he may decide it's something he doesn't want to do as much as he thought he did.
If he's butch enough, he might be able to handle it. And no, I would wish no harm to come to this young man. However, you can learn more in public school than just the three rs.

I must say, some parts of Oak Cliff are actually nice. Just saying.
Having said that, he's at Sunset High School, and you would think that he'd be a real target, but it says he's 17... is he new to the school? Or has he been there for 2 years already? Maybe he's just taken as the school oddity and nobody really cares as much as you'd think. Apathy does run deep in high school these days - and kids are really hard to shock.

Wow, I just scrolled to the bottom of the linked story - clicked on related stories...
You can watch Valdaramma explain it for himself. Maybe all of you saw it already. It is sad in lots of ways.
It is never told whether he is new to this school - we have to re-register every year out here. If he's new, I wonder where he was before? He seems very unconcerned.
At least he's out and not in fear of being discovered a la The Crying Game/Boys Don't Cry....

sjt, I don't live there but have worked with peeps who do and from visiting their place (unless there's some magical area of town I didn't roll through) I wouldn't expect a cross-dresser to be accepted in most circles of high school kids. Not to mention, Oak Cliff has a rep - just sayin'.
Didn't know you have to live in a place to get an idea as to what the neighborhood is like, btw.

Stevens Park and Kessler Park are beautiful areas of oak cliff with gorgeous homes. I attended Skyline High School in pleasant grove. I didn't cross dress, but I was one of only two students out of 4,500 that wore wranglers and boots every day to school. I never had any problems.

Aaron, there were only two cowboys at Skyline? I can't believe what's happened to Texas!
We have more cowboys in the burbs of Coppell than that! But we have more emos than cowboys. I haven't heard of a cross-dresser so far. But the year is young.

Grats. There are exceptions to most places with a negative rep; if the kid is perfectly fine running the risk, let him. Natural selection if anything happens, imo.

As long as he is honest and registers as a male and uses the little boys' room versus the little girls', then no harm imo. We all did something in high school to stand out... Right?

Goat roper always sounded...wrong.
And I don't wish harm on the kid, in fact I slightly respect how brave he is to do such a thing in that type of environment. But if something does happen, difficult for me to feel bad for the chum.

This is not the first time a student has had issues with cross dressing in school. There was another incident back in April with a Fort Worth ISD student.

What's with all the Oak Cliff bashing? I can remember back when people said the same thing about East Dallas and I don't like this either. If you love Dallas, don't bash Oak Cliff. Otherwise enjoy Frisco, have a Starbucks, go to the mall and max out your cards, cower in fear at non-Whites and be sure not to look at any nude Art.

lakewooder, what are you talking about? You probably know as well as I do that the streets here in Oak Cliff are littered with the bodies of crime victims, most of which are from North Dallas and it's suburbs who's cars broke down on Jefferson.
You know- up there where there is no such thing as random crime.

You think North Dallas residents are the only ones who believe Oak Cliff isn't the safest place in Dallas?

Oh my gosh, I thought this was about Luis Valderamma! I have friends that live in Oak Cliff, in a nice house, in a nice neighborhood with huge trees, etc., etc. Yes, the gay community has grown there, and what effect that has had, I don't know, but my friends are an ordinary married couple with lots of great neighbors. For crying out loud, I live in Coppell, and even I get out enough to know that not all of Oak Cliff is the same.
Frankly, Coppell is a little too much of a bubble for me, but I did live in Lakewood once upon a time, so I do know there's life outside...
Aaron, sorry about the "cowboy" - they do call them rednecks out here but there's plenty of kids that fall into that group and I don't think they are looked down upon. I just thought cowboy was more polite, though I don't think redneck is meant as a perticularly derogatory term at our high school. Just mindin' my mannners.
I STILL want to know where Luis Valdaramma came from - new to Sunset or not? His cross-dressing does not sound like new behavior, at least not from the video blurb. I would also like to hear how the Ft. Worth issue was resolved. Does anyone know the answers to either of these questions?

Well, from what I can recall the kid did receive several school infractions for being disruptive. The School did suspend the kid for a day, also has been threatened with a three day suspension. I also recall that he/she? was cited by the school police for profanity.
It appears that the school tolerates it to a certain level until he/she disrupts others from learning. It sounds like the kid brings it on her/his self.
