UPDATED: DART to make Live Oak lane closure on southbound 75 more permanent

Petitioned by calls and letters from frustrated drivers, TxDOT is finally getting a clue and making the temporary lane closure on US 75 at Live Oak into a more permanent deal, a spokesman told KRLD.

Rather than rely on temporary orange barrels, the agency will officially shift traffic to the right and paint new stripes on the road. This is great: The spokesman said that because the project is going to take two years, TxDOT realized they needed to treat this as a permanent problem instead of a temporary one. Brilliant! That's what the people at TxDOT are. Brilliant.

UPATE: Traffic officials pledge to, uh, redraw the highway lanes near the Live Oak exit in order to help improve traffic flow.

The Live Oak exit has been closed for months and they haven't even touched it. They're using the road as a storage area for poles/supports of some kind.

how the TXDOT manual must read to call the permanent closure at Live Oak & 75 a solution:

"If people give you a lot of %^$# just do the opposite of what they want and they'll shut up. " or "To solve a problem requires creating other problems if you are to succeed in solving the first problem."

The Live Oak lane closure manages to simultaneously illustrate TxDOT's incompetence as well as its indifference towards Texas drivers: 1) As pointed out by brint, as of yet there has been no need for the closure: the only thing that TxDOT is doing is storing poles on the right shoulder about half way down. In other words, the millions of dollars in lost productivity, wasted time, numerous fender benders, and excess auto emissions have all been for nought. 2) Even WITH the closure, the massive backups and associated problems could have been easily avoided with the lane restriping, which they are only now begrudgingly agreeing to implement.
