Sept. 15 is Astronomy Day for UT Dallas

Star gazing, tips for buying a telescope and observation advice are a few of the activities planned for Astronomy Day on Saturday, Sept. 15 at The University of Texas at Dallas.

Put on by the Texas Astronomical Society (TAS), daytime events are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and will take place in UT Dallas’ Hoblitzelle Hall auditorium (Room 2.402). Evening observations will begin at nightfall and continue through 11 p.m. on the field near Hoblitzelle Hall. All activities are family-oriented, free and open to the public.

Schedule of events:

  • 2–5:30 p.m. — Solar viewing, children’s activities, meteorite display
  • 2–3 p.m. — “What’s Up There to See” — a tour of the night skies by a TAS member
  • 3–4 p.m. — “How to Build a Dobsonian Telescope” — featuring renowned telescope maker Tom Noe
  • 4–5 p.m. — “Golden Age of Telescopes” — talk by Max Corneau, TAS member and NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory Solar System Ambassador
  • 6–7 p.m. — “Buying Your First Telescope” — how to get exactly what you want in a telescope
  • 7–8 p.m. — “How to Build a Dobsonian Telescope” — repeat presentation
  • 8–9 p.m. — “Seeing Those Dim Fuzzies” — Observe a live demonstration by master astrophotographers Jay Ballauer and Vance Bagwell
  • 8:30-11 p.m. — Nighttime astronomy — TAS telescopes open to the public
