DALLAS Tom Spicer, aka "Spiceman," supplies many of Dallas top restaurants with fresh, exotic produce like seasonal wild mushrooms, fresh hearts of palm, and fresh hand-trimmed artichokes ready to cook. Spiceman's F.M. 1410, his wholesale/retail chef's market, is located two doors down from Jimmy's Italian Grocery at Bryan and Fitzhugh Ave.
What's cool about the market is that he'll sell to regular laymen. This means you can buy the same exotic produce that's being prepared for you by Dallas' finest chefs. The thing you hear over and over again from chefs these days is that their food is all about the ingredients, that they simply procure carefully, finding the best ingredients they can and then minimizing what they do to it so that the quality of the ingredient can shine through. Well here's your chance to compete with them. In fact, consider one-upping them by buying these ingredients and just putting them on a plate. There! You're more avant-garde than any chef in the country.
Hours for retail are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. If you get on Spiceman's mailing list, he sends out a list of what's currently in the market. To wit:

Yes, a very cool shop!
But, this news is kind of dated: http://backtalklakehighlands.typepad....
I'm told by those in the know that Alibaster K. Abthernabther intends to break this news for the DMN's Quick sometime next March.
People Mag P.S.... Susan Spicer of Bayona is Tom's sister. http://www.bayona.com/

Over Thanksgiving took my "food savy" sister from NYC to FM 1410. She was duly impressed, especially by the enthusiasm that Tom has for his offerings.
We bought some radish, lemons, and satsuma oranges. All were delicously fresh. Hate to see it get too popular though.
