Dallas’ whiz-kid musician Emily Elbert up to good things, says mom

2

Elbert.

Elbert.

Raised in Coppell and Dallas, Emily Elbert is a 17-year-old* musician with outstanding talent and the voice of a veteran songbird.

While Big D should be proud to have birthed her, she moved out to Berklee College of Music in Boston last year. But we can mend our broken hearts knowing she's up to good stuff, lots of good stuff. Says her actual mother:

"Emily is doing some wildly diverse styles of music these days – in addition to her acoustic solo gigs around Boston, she’s singing reggae with Berklee’s Bob Marley Ensemble."

But wait, hay mas:

-----

Lately, she’s been having a blast performing with her friend, 16-year old wonderkid, Anthony da Costa, who has made her gigs more fun than work. (If you haven’t heard his music, check out his myspace, then his YouTube video of "” a parody of an MTV show; then watch the video of sleep-deprived Emily and Anthony goofing around with a Timberlake/Barkley tribute.) Occasionally on weekends, she takes a bus to New York City, where she joins friends (who she met the previous year at Berklee’s summer program and in Los Angeles with the Grammy Jazz Band) as vocalist for the funk band, Captain Coconut. In January, she’ll be performing with G Love and Special Sauce, singing and playing alternative hip-hop mixed with classic R & B, at shows in Rhode Island, Vermont, and New Hampshire.

So Emily is immersed in a wide variety of music styles and is getting an incredible music education in Boston and the northeast. And she’s looking forward to being back in Texas for a few weeks in December and January.

Also, she's got an upcoming gig at Crossroads Coffeehouse and Music Company in Winnsboro, Texas – opening for Ruthie Foster. While Winnsboro is geographically out of our coverage area, Mrs. Elbert promises it'll be a good show, and that Ruthie Foster is "phenomenal!" to boot.

Not much older - she was in the Coppell High School talent show LAST YEAR - so she's - oh what, 18... verging on 19?

She is very gifted - and unusual in her sound - sort of acoustic that you think is going to be very singer-songwriter - but then no... it becomes very jazz. Cool for an oh so white suburb. We love Emily out here.
