Authorities with the North Texas Tollway Authority appear to think that all those quarters plugged into the toll booths every day are their own personal slush fund. Possibly at the behest of "outraged" State Senator John Carona, a Dallas Republican, CBS 11 undertook an awesome investigation that shows NTTA officials blowing millions of quarters on first class airplane tickets, Internet access, phone adapters, "heavy luggage" fees, dinners in castles, and other perks.
Current tollway Deputy Executive Director Rick Herrington looks bad but Financial Officer Susan Buse looks even worse: She blew $7,000 on a business-class airline ticket to Vienna for a conference, and went there 5 days before the conference started. Two months later, there's still no sign of her receipts. Uh-oh! According to CBS 11, the cost for five NTTA people going to Vienna was $42,000. CBS 11 also caught NTTA people on camera as they skipped out on the conference and shopped for souvenirs instead.
