Residents of a gated community in Copper Canyon are shaken after a woman was gunned down last night by her ex-boyfriend as she drove into the neighborhood.
Police said that Vanessa Nichoel Garces, 21, was murdered by Patrick Thomas Dyson, 26, of Lake Dallas around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday near her home in the 4500 block of Mahogany Lane in The Estates at Copper Canyon neighborhood.
"He followed her into the community through the security gate, rammed his truck into her car and shot her several times," said Tom Reedy with the Denton County Sheriff's Office.
After hearing gunshots, several neighbors ran outside and found Garces sitting in the front seat of her automobile dead of multiple gunshot wounds.
"He rear-ended her car with his Chevy Avalanche right by my front yard, then started shooting." said Robert Koren of Mahogany Lane.
"There had to have been at least 10 shots fired," added neighbor Daniel Beal. "Then he calmly drove off and waited for the gate to open instead of ramming it."
Officers caught up with Dyson at his parent's house in Hickory Creek. After a three-hour standoff that ended about 6:45 this morning, Dyson was taken to the Denton County Jail and booked on charges of murder, where he remains awaiting arraignment.
According to neighbors, Garces lived with her parents and had a 2-year old daughter, who was not in her vehicle at the time.
The Estates at Copper Canyon subdivision is located at the northwest corner of FM 407 and Jernigan Road.
This is the first murder in Copper Canyon in many years.

So, he's not worried about getting away from the scene as fast as possible...but he'll waste everyone's time with a 3-hour standoff at his parents' house?
Hope the needle hurts.

I wonder if his parents were there, and if he told them what he'd done. Seems like it would be awkward.
