National Board of Review declares No Country… best film of 2007
Coen Brothers' cinematographer Deakins takes home career achievement honors, to boot.
Let's start with the big news: the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures has chosen No Country for Old Men as the Best Film of 2007. I'd have a hard time disagreeing.
In addition to taking the top movie honors, No Country... also garnered an award for Best Ensemble Cast, along with a Best Adapted Screenplay award for the Coen Brothers. Roger Deakins, long-time Coen crew cinematographer, received a Career Achievement in Cinematography award.
Aside from Best Film, here are their top ten favorite movies the year: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford; Atonement (which opens locally this Friday, Dec. 7); The Bourne Ultimatum; The Bucket List (opens Christmas day); Into the Wild; Juno (opened limited - though not yet in North Texas - today, Dec. 5); The Kite Runner (opening Dec. 14); Lars and the Real Girl; MIchael Clayton; and Sweeney Todd (opening 21 Dec.).
Other highlights: George Clooney got the nod for Best Actor for his Michael Clayton performance; Julie Christie received Best Actress honors for her part in Away From Her; while Tim Burton won for Best Director for the (as-yet unseen in our fair city) Sweeney Todd.
The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures is composed of film historians, students and educators. Theirs are the first-announced award selections of the awards season.

Montgomery Sutton, says:
Good for Burton! Seems like critics and awards rarely give him the accolades that we mere moviegoers know he deserves.
I can't wait for Todd. Greatest musical of the 20th century, by one of America's greatest directors.
