The Living Opera announces 2008 season
The Living Opera is pleased to announce their 2008 season - an exploration of Love's Rocky Road. From Mozart's silly and unfaithful maidens, to Faust's seduction of purity, right up to a daughter torn between love and duty - nothing goes smoothly when love and opera are combined:
- A Grand Night For Opera: The season will open on Sunday, June 1st with "A Grand Night for Opera" - a potpourri of favorite love (and seduction) arias, ensembles, and excerpted scenes presented in a semi-staged version and sung by artists to be featured in this season's productions. This one-time-only event will be a matinee at 2:00 p.m.
- Cosi fan Tutte: Mozart's comedic masterpiece of two love-sick couples responding to a devilish dare that women cannot remain faithful...not even for even one day. As the boys don disguises and woo each other's sweetheart, hilarity ensues in this light hearted romp through the trials and tribulations of romance. Performances are June 13-15.
- Henry Faust: Affections become devastating when TLO hosts the Texas premiere of the Pulitzer Prize nominated opera. This epic solo work by Composer-in-Residence Gregory Sullivan Isaacs is an innovative and ambitious three act opera written for one character, Faust himself. Henry Faust, alone and miserable following the disastrous wooing of the pure Gretchen, plays out on the stage of his mind as he makes a pact with the devil that seals his fate and descends him into madness. The role will be sung by the dazzling American tenor and international opera star - Drew Slatton - who has sung major roles with many outstanding regional companies including Orlando, Connecticut, and Sarasota. Most recently, he sang Radames in Verdi's Aïda with The Nevada Opera. Based entirely on words of the stage play, this dramatic re-imagining of the Goethe drama is a tour de force and not-to-be-missed. Performances are July 6, 9 and 12.
- Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore: By the overwhelming demand of audiences following last season's smash hit, Pirates of Penzance, TLO will present H.M.S Pinafore. Gilbert and Sullivan's perennial favorite sea faring story of a captain's daughter in love with a lowly sailor is sure to tickle the funny bone and leave you singing "I'm called little Buttercup." The usual G&S tom foolery ensues as babies are mixed up at birth and dark secrets are revealed. Excellent for families and children of all ages. Performances are July 10-12.
All performances will be held in the Countrywide Theater at the Eisemann Center. Season tickets ($90-210) are available online or by calling 972-494-3500.
