Weekend Concert Roundup: Dec. 7-9
Weekend full of music, dead ahead.
Friday
Alt-Country / Americana / Country - Hacienda Brothers / Boys Named Sue - With five actual band members taking the "boys named sue" title very seriously (band members include Snakebite Sue and Dub Sue), they come from rock/punk backgrounds but jam several times per month playing out their childhood Country influences.
Bluegrass - Green Mountain Grass StoneAge Band - Describing themselves as "gonzograss," Green Mountain Grass out of Austin is a slight departure from your grandpa's bluegrass. The first departure, the sheer age of the band, with all members under 30 (three of them 25 and under). Curious what kind of guys it takes to put together a "gonzograss" group? Read the linked blog post and ye shall see the light.
Blues - Sonny Landreth / Bugs Henderson - Bugs Henderson is a given, particularly for anyone who knows a lick about local blues music. In addition, you get to check out Sonny Landreth, who has released several albums and has attained a well deserved national reputation for great music. He's recorded with Bonny Raitt, if that means anything to you.
Choir / Chorale / Holiday - Turtle Creek Chorale: "Children Will Listen" - HA! No they won't.
Cover and Tribute Bands - Strippers Lie - This has just ruined my whole impression of strippers. Nonetheless, this Houston based cover band plays a range of mid-90's to current rock music like Tool, Manson, Rage, White Stripes, with the occasional root rock mixed in like Skynyrd.
Electronica / Pop / Alt-Indie - The Crash That Took Me / Mom / The Future Unlived - They should title this show, "The crash that took your mom into the unlived future." That would be super clever.
Latin / Rap / Hip-Hop / Rock - Mad Mexicans / Deaf Pedestrians / Social Jab / Underprime - A show of many genres. You have to wonder. What are they so mad about? I mean, I can't imagine one reason why...
Jazz / Cajun / Zydeco - BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet in concert - Finally, Zydeco makes another appearance in the area. Oh thank you, Cajun Jesus, thank you!
Polka - BraveCombo - Hey, look! There's polka today!
Pop / Punk - Villains / The Valentines / The Vibes - A vabulous vhow to vo vee.
Rock - John Fogerty - John Fogerty could kick your dad's ass. Just so your dad knows.
Saturday
Alt-Country / Americana / Country - Noel Haggard - The son of Merle Haggard, Noel is releasing his CD at the Stagecoach Ballroom tonight.
Bluegrass - Cadillac Sky / Jared Crump - You can find local boys, Cadillac Sky's, latest music video for Born Lonesome on CMT.com. After this show and a Dallas performance at the end of the month, CS heads off for various Bluegrass festivals and tours the nation over and won't be home for some time. A prudent DFW fan would take advantage of these two intimate shows with one of our liveliest bands before they head out of town. Of course, if being an idiot is your thing, you could put it off.
Blues - Guitar Shorty / Mike Morgan and the Crawl - There is a ton of Blues this Saturday for you to enjoy, so my recommendation is to check out the event that will help keep blues on the radio as well. At Poor David's you can not only catch Guitar Shorty and Mike Morgan, but support KNON as well.
Choir / Chorale / Holiday - The Choral Society / WindSong Handbell Ensemble / The Brookhaven Handbell Ensemble - Curious what a lot of handbells played in harmony sound like. Curious what they sound like in person? After some tylenol? Well...
Cover and Tribute - Escape / Sea of Sorrow / Creeper - Journey and Alice in Chains would never have played a show together, but in tribute form how could they not?
Electronica / Rap and Hip-Hop - Lazer / MC Router / The Triggermen - Finally the union of some of our Peg-favorite acts in DFW. Lazer haven't played a show in a while and one can only imagine what Router will pull out in the presence of so many speedo clad Rhinelanders. Don't forget to stop down the street and give a little something something to the KNON Rap/Hip-Hop Benefit at The Bone.
Jazz - Second Saturday - A little Jazz. A little wine. A little art and/or sculpture. Why the hell not, I always say.
Latin - Music and Movement: Mariachi Reyes de Dallas - Obviously many of us cannot move as gracefully to Latin music as others, but here's another chance to give it a shot. There's no shame in trying. Unless someone sees your uncoordinated self laying down the moves. Then there's shame all around.
Metal / Rock - Lamb of God / Killswitch Engage / Devildriver / Soilwork - No strangers to the area, Lamb of God and Killswitch Engage have rocked Dallas to it's core several times before. You can check out a plethora of media on both bands here including reviews, live pictures, and an interview. Needless to say, we really like these two bands.
Punk / Rockabilly / Girls bashing eachother with rollerskates - Dallas Derby Devils with Sawed Off Sick - No music goes better with Roller Derby than the punkabilly stylings of our own Sawed Off Sick. Part crazy rhythms, part mad licks, part burlesque, they will set the perfect stage for a fine ass kickin'. Like when Fogerty kicks your dad's ass. Just warning you! Oh yeah, bring an unwrapped toy, because this ass kickin' accompanies some charitable stuff.

The Crash That Took Me is listed above as Friday, although the article has the correct date of Saturday. Tonight, at the Doublewide, Denton's Grass Fight, Wichita's In the Wake and local boys the Felons follow the showing of the documentary film No Talent Geniuses at the Doublewide. Should be a fun night.

The night we took that picture was probibly the worst show ever. It was at an ex-strip club turned "bikini-sports bar". We had to play in a single file because it had a runway not a stage. And the pole kinda got in the way.
