Readers of the Dallas Morning News declare favorite tamales

Readers of the Dallas Morning News' Taste section offered a bunch of suggestions for their favorite tamales. The list even includes those favored by a semi-celebrity, Gloria Campos (Panaderia Mexicana, at 727 S. Cockrell Hill Road, and Ranchero Restaurant & Bakery, 7406 Harry Hines Blvd.).

Those tamales are looking at me, I swear. Make them stop. MAKE THEM STOP LOOKING AT ME!!!

Warm and Fuzzy

Those tamales are looking at me, I swear. Make them stop. MAKE THEM STOP LOOKING AT ME!!!

Unfortunately, the list never comes out and says whether one place "won", either by quality of tamale or quantity of votes.

On the list: Central Market, Aparicio's, Luna's Tortilla Factory, Rudy's Tortillas, Lopez Tortilla Factory, La Popular Tamale House, Eat the World, Uncle Julio's, La Victoria, and Hot Damn, Tamales! in Fort Worth.

This list is handy not just for the holidays, when tamales are a popular item for Mexican families (and others), but also down the road, as some tastemakers have proclaimed 2008 to possibly be the year of the tamale.

Interesting to note that the CM tamales mentioned were not their own private label! What a huge miss.

And Toby's tamales at Eat the World absolutely rule -- esp. the smoked chicken.
