The Dallas County Community College District has received several federal, state and private grants during November and December that support programs directed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Lumina Foundation. Grant details are provided below.
* The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the Dallas County Community College District and Eastfield College a grant in the amount of $150,000 to support EFC’s Head Start Partnership program. The grant provides assistance to Head Start teachers so that they can earn associate’s and bachelor’s degrees. The funding period began Sept. 30, 2007, and ends Sept. 29, 2008.
* The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has awarded DCCCD a $99,000 grant that supports the Collegiate G Force Program (for work study student mentorship). The grant addresses participation and success goals related to “Closing the Gaps,” a statewide initiative in higher education that seeks to increase the number of students enrolled and retained in Texas colleges and universities, especially minorities, in response to changing state demographics and the need to train an educated workforce. The funding period began Sept. 1, 2007, and ends on Aug. 31, 2008. Four Dallas County Community College District institutions - Brookhaven, Eastfield, Mountain View and North Lake colleges - receive $24,750 each under the grant.
* The Dallas County Community College District and its R. Jan LeCroy Center for Educational Telecommunications have received a $280,834 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for the state’s STARLINK program (State of Texas Academic Link). The grant provides funds to community colleges for faculty development training. The funding period started Sept. 1, 2007, and ends Aug. 31, 2008.
* The Lumina Foundation has awarded a grant increase in the amount of $101,300 to the Dallas County Community College District and Brookhaven College to support the Achieving the Dream program, including expenses incurred and districtwide student success initiatives. The award increase brings the total Lumina Foundation grant total for Brookhaven College to $315,930 for Sept. 1, 2007, through Aug. 31, 2008.
