Dallas radio station 97.1-FM reverts to “The Eagle” rock format
DALLAS As reported by UP, 97.1-FM returned to a hard-rock format, as of Tuesday morning.
"We did launch the Eagle at 10 a.m. this morning," says Clear Channel market manager J.D. Freeman. "The Eagle left the airwaves on May 18, 2004, and now we have returned to the rock format.
"It's on, it's going, it's rock. We're playing Ozzy, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Metallica. We're calling it a "heritage" rock station -- not classic rock. It's gonna be some new and old, but primarily rock and roll."
The station, which had recently been playing Christmas music, previously had a Spanish-language format, called La Preciosa; that Web site says, "We are OFFLINE for now, Please check back again later."
For now, the station is just running music, but Freeman says they'll be adding personalities in January.

We're getting nasty calls here at the office from people who seem to think that we're The Eagle. The folks calling also seem to miss the Christmas music and to be blissfully unaware of 103.7, AM 770, etc...
Bet these folks are happy:

Very glad to hear that "The Eagle" is back, however, not sure what "heritage" rock means. I'm betting the blocks of songs will be one new, two - three older. This was a format I noticed on a recent trip to Detroit ("Rock City") on "The RIF" (WRIF).

It's a freakin' Christmas miracle!
I, too, am concerned about what "heritage" rock is, but hopefully it'll mean "None of that crap scene kids like to mope around to."
What are the angry callers complaining about?

The proof is in the playlist, the commerical load and the on air personalities. I hope the on air presentation is not as "heritage" as Bo and Jim on Lonestar. Clear Channel is still betting that Lonestar 92.5 is going to take off but according to Arbitron they have handed the reigns and the numbers to 93.3 The Bone. Recuredo 97.1 is gone in a market that has become over saturated with spanish speaking stations that offer a limited music mix to their listeners. Clear Channel seems to be visionary in their thinking for DFW Radio by bringing back something that never should have left, tweaking something that needed it (KZPS) albeit their morning show needs to go, but my only question is how does Mix 102.9 still exist. Clear Channel is losing its Evil Empire image....congrats.

Now that the Eagle is back, I really hope that The Edge will stop taking on their playlist.
For the first time, since owning a car, I took The Edge off the presets the minute I heard "Sweet Child O Mine" on there.

Anyone else notice the call letters' similarity to a certain feminine exercise?

I too am happy that The Eagle is back however, I'm a little disappointed in their format. If I wanted to listed to Led Zepplin or ACDC, I would tune into 93.3 The Bone where I can listen to these bands every hour on the hour. Dallas needs a true rock station that plays current hard rock and I'm not just talking about playing one current song with 3 to 4 songs from the 70's and 80's. If the Eagle intends on being a profitable and successful radio station, it needs to focus on new rock including the occassional 90's song because as far as I'm concerned, the music of the 90's is what made rock the way it is today. We have 2 other stations in Dallas that play Classic and 80's metal. We don't need another.

Please tell me them picking up Lex & Terry in the morning is only temporary. The Edge has already gone down that road. While I don't mind the show, is it necessary to have it on 2 stations in the metroplex (I realize both are clear channel, but c'mon!)? I liked hearing some random rock on my way to work the past couple of weeks.
And delux2k, when you're at a pc methinks you'd dig Austin's 101X streaming live. I basically forget that I have an MP3 player and CD's when I visit Austin - obviously not every song is my taste, but it's close enough for government work.

Id rather have a 101x-type station in this market, KDGE/KEGL are both shadows of their former radio selves. You can blame the CheapChannel Empire for the milquetoast sound. At least the Emmis Austin cluster gets it right with the local music scene.

Alas, Scott, Lex and Terry will be on The Eagle for good and are only being simulcast on The Edge today and tomorrow. After that The Edge will get a new morning show, though I can't find any information yet on who/what that will be.

Seriously? Clear Channel is the devil, they have pretty much single handedly destroyed radio, in every format. "Heritage Rock" is probably a term that they found tested well in a focus group and decided to run with it.

Can't stand these new homos on 102.1 these days, btw. Don't recall their names, don't care. I've listened for 3-4 days...hate hate hate.
I miss when they simply played music. =(
(I don't recall the thread talking about the dude who was all about playing music in the morning, but I salute you).

I would be 100% thrilled to have the old Eagle back. Must have Cindy Skull, and like one person said, mandatory Metallica. Personalities are everything. It has been disgusting to live in a market this huge without a true ROCK station, willing to promote rock concerts, though the Bone has tried some of that. Give me my Album Rock, new and some old true Rock would be cool! The removal of the old Eagle was one of the worst entertainment debacles of all time. I would almost give up High Def TV for the TRUE OLD EAGLE.

The removal of the old Eagle is because it failed in its ratings. It is failing now and will fail in the future. The Clear Channel formula has ruined radio and the only reason they keep recycling the same bits over is because they think it works. The only reason they think it works is because they have no competition and the barriers to entry are way too high.
I'll say one thing, though. Apple probably loves Clear Channel. If it weren't for lousy radio, iPods probably wouldn't sell quite as well. You'd also hear more people complain that iPods don't have FM.
