Fort Worth police chief to retire in February 2008

Ralph Mendoza to end his 8 years as chief and 35 years with the Fort Worth Police Department.

Fort Worth Police Chief Ralph Mendoza has announced his retirement, effective February 2008. Mendoza's retirement will bring to an end his 8-year tenure as police chief and his 35 years with the Fort Worth Police Department.

According to the glowing press release, Mendoza is credited with many innovations during his time as chief, including adding more than 275 authorized crimefighters (no mention of the number of unauthorized crimefighters added -- Batman, you just got burned), bringing back black and white patrol cars (they should really switch to these), and, because no decent police force is worth a darn without assault rifles, adding AR-15s to the department's weaponry cache. Oh, and he has helped maintain Fort Worth's relatively-low crime rate (still the ninth-safest large city in the country!) by pushing programs to make citizens more alert and to reduce violence.

So kudos, Chief Mendoza, and fare thee well.
