The University of Texas at Dallas will host Pix2 in the Main Gallery of the University’s Visual Arts Building Jan. 18 – Feb. 22. The exhibition, curated by faculty member John Pomara, is free and open to the public.
Pomara has gathered art writers and critics from the Dallas-Fort Worth area and asked each to select an up-and-coming young artist who shows promise and merit or an older artist who has not been prominently showcased in area galleries. This exhibition is an opportunity for the public to view artists “under the radar” in the North Texas art scene.
The first critics’ choice exhibition, Pix, was held at UT Dallas in 1999. Several of the artists featured later exhibited works at Barry Whistler Gallery, Marty Walker Gallery, Eugene Binder Gallery, Kidder Smith Gallery, Dallas Museum of Art, Angstrom Gallery and the McKinney Avenue Contemporary.
The art writers and critics followed by the artists they selected for this exhibition include:
- Matthew Bourbon (Flash Art and Art Lies) - Alan Reid.
- Fran Colpitt (Art in America and Art Lies) - Cam Schoepp.
- J.R. Compton (DallasArtRevue) - Kim Cadmus Owens.
- Rachel Cook (Glasstire) - Libby Black, Margaret Meehan and Rebecca Carter.
- Mike Daniel (The Dallas Morning News) - Sara Ishii.
- Janet Kutner (former critic of The Dallas Morning News) - Eric Chavera.
- Charles Dee Mitchell (Art in America and The Dallas Morning News) - Peter Calvin.
- Titus O’Brien (Glasstire, Art Lies and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram) - Kevin Brown.
- Michael Odom (Art Forum, Art Papers and Art Lies) - Josephine Durkin.
- Noah Simblist (Glasstire and Art Lies) - Terri Thornton.
- Charissa Terranova (The Dallas Morning News, Glasstire and Art Lies) - Amy Revier.
The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 18, from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
