Janice Fehlauer: prize-winning pianist

Janice Fehlauer (of Chilliwack, British Columbia) plans on graduating with a master's degree in piano performance from the University of North Texas in May of next year. She recently took top honors in the Nena Wideman Piano Competition, hosted by the Centenary College-Hurley School of Music in Shreveport, LA.

The competition victory carries with it a $5,000 cash prize and the opportunity to perform at various venues around the country, including appearances with the Meridian Symphony Orchestra in Mississippi; the North Florida Orchestra; and the Shreveport Symphony. She will also be presenting recitals in Jackson, MS (under the auspices of the Bell Series at Millsaps College); in Washington, D.C. (at the Philllips Collection); and in Chicago (as part of the Dame Myra Hess Recital Series).

During the final round of competition in Shreveport, Ms. Fehlauer competed against applicants from SUNY, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Curtis Institute of Music and the Julliard.

Says Fehlauer: "This award is the recognition of a lot of years of work, which is great, but it's also the opportunity to perform. I love performing - that's why we practice for hours and days and years."

The recorded performance that got her into the competition to begin with: a rendering of Bartók's Concerto No. 2. Assist to Hungary.
