— School-graders at Dallas ISD Bayles Elementary were recently treated to the spectacle of a helicopter descending from the sky and landing onto their playground. Passengers included two NASA astronauts and Former Dallas Mayor Laura Miller.

The astronauts and mayor arrived at the noontime outdoor celebration to honor 25 Bayles students who submitted winning essays on the importance of exercise and nutrition. Dallas ISD Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa also attended and praised the students’ work. Each of the winners received a new pair of running shoes courtesy of the Wellstone White Rock Marathon and New Balance.

NASA Mission Specialist Dorothy M. Metcalf-Lindenburger told the students that she started running for fitness when she was in elementary school, and continues to run daily as she prepares for her first space shuttle mission.

NASA Mission Specialist Col. Jeffrey N. Williams has been in space twice, once aboard the Space Shuttle for 10 days in 2000, and as Expedition 13 Flight Engineer and Science Officer aboard the International Space Station for six months in 2006.

Both astronauts and former mayor Miller ran in the Dallas Wellstone White Rock Marathon on December 9.

Hey! That's the elementary school I went to! We never had any astronauts... well, or Laura Miller, now that I think of it...
