Macy’s in Valley View to close
DALLAS — Macy’s, Inc. today announced the closing of nine underperforming Macy’s stores, included the store in Valley View mall. The store, formerly a Sanger's and then a Foley's, employs 132 employees.

Final clearance sales at these stores will begin on varying schedules within the next several weeks.
“While the decision to close stores is difficult, it is necessary that we do so selectively in locations with declining sales and where we have been unable to identify sufficient growth opportunities,” said Terry J. Lundgren, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc. “At the same time, we continue to open new Macy’s store locations in communities where we believe we can operate successfully.”
The company opened 10 new stores and one furniture gallery in 2007. In 2008, Macy’s, Inc. expects to open five stores, with an additional six to eight new locations currently planned for 2009.
Associates displaced by store closings will be offered positions in nearby stores where possible. Associates who are laid off in this process will be provided severance benefits and outplacement assistance.

Poor Valley View. When i first moved to DFW in 1983, this was a FANTASTIC mall. Unfortunately, it's been circling the drain for the last 7 or 8 years. Seems like all of these malls have a finite life...except for Northpark, where a constant infusion of $$$ and the surrounding wealthy clientele keep the mall fresh and alive.

I'm somewhat suprised that Valley View has lasted as long as it has. The surrounding neighborhoods are low income, you have lost all major chain stores in the area with the exception of the Target, the traffic patterns in the area don't help to lead the folks in but instead out. The major prop up for the last few years is the AMC Theater. It doesn't make much sense for two Macy's within a few miles of each other anyway - the Galleria is just blocks away and lets face it, thats the Cathedral of all Dallas Macy's.

Not only are all of the above true, but here's another: the mall parking lot hosts a ghetto traveling carnival a few times a year. And that just attracts such a good crowd. When was the last time you ever saw one of these at ANY mall with a Nordstrom's, Saks, or Neiman's? It's more at home in places like Six Flags Mall or Irving Mall. They should just do what they did with Prestonwood, raze the entire place.

I just hope there's a way to preserve the Sanger-Harris mosaic murals, a la the Mercantile project downtown. I've loved those murals ever since I was a child, when Wicks'n'Sticks and Ravi's were still tenants there.

This neighborhood is going high income in a hurry. We are seeing a bunch of things on the City Plan Comm for construction of high-end apts, senior centers, and other expensive living quarters around the mall.
I feel for the workers that got let go more than anything else here.
