Tarrant County New Year’s boozebags free to blow hands off with fireworks

6

...as long as you are in an unincorporated area.

It only stings for a minute.

It only stings for a minute.

Despite efforts to the contrary, Tarrant County commissioners have overturned the limited fireworks ban in Tarrant County. In an effort to prevent forest fires (leave that to the professionals, please) TC Fire Marshal Randy Renois asked for the limited fireworks ban, which would have prohibited lighting aerial explosives, and a 90-day burn ban. With all the rain DFW has gotten lately, the commission ultimately decided that the fire risk was not enough to support such bans.

Presumably, anything short of surface to air missiles are free for firing in the unincorporated areas of Tarrant County, as in, all the white areas on this map (no, White Settlement, we don't mean you).

Peter Stawicki says:

Did we need that picture. I know its there for the shock value and to push home the belief that fireworks are a bad and dangerous thing, however -

For all the fireworks sold in the US (Which is harder number to find than the estimated injuries) there were (4) deaths and 6500 injuries with 45% of those being children under 15 (2005 CDC Data).

If you are a responsible parent or guardian, if you purchase the firework products that are more show and less bang, if you provide a good, safe, well lit and preferabbly concrete area to use such fireworks, and basically if you are just careful - fireworks can be entertaining and a fun activity for the whole family.

Yes, invariably there will be any number of idiots mostly below the age of 18 who will record some wonderful clips involving their rump and some explosive device and no doubt such a thing will demonstrate why you dont want to follow in that path. No doubt Darwin will hopefully assist in their removal from the general gene pool and we wont have to worry.

Mike Orren says:

You'll find we try not to take the news so seriously around here and that our photos are more for comic relief than to push a belief...

That said, this one turned my tum a bit too. But then I'm on the squeamish side.

Scott Doyle says:

The caption makes the uneasy feeling worthwhile, imo.

Some of the most intelligent people I know have done very stupid things with fireworks. None tried firing bottle-rockets out of their butt (that I know of), but having fun doesn't necessarily mean you're ignorant...I'm sure most of the time fireworks shenanigans are a relatively calculated risk.

I'd say 6,500 injuries isn't too much on a national scale, tbh.

Oh, you're walking around with all that stuff inside you, too.
