UNT Mayborn Scholar named finalist in horror story writing contest
Candace Carlisle, a journalism student and Mayborn Scholar at the University of North Texas, had her short story - "The Horror" - selected as a finalist in the Writer's League of Texas College Horror Short Story competition earlier this month.
Ms. Carlisle hails originally from Logan, Utah; she earned a bachelor's degree in business from UTD and has since (for the past year and a half) been studying narrative nonfiction at UNT, where she expects to graduate with a master's in journalism from Mayborn Graduate School next spring. (That whole business thing must have ended up seeming a bit dry for someone with her literary bent, we speculate.) Candace freelances for the Denton Record-Chronicle and plans to continue writing after graduation, hopefully for a newspaper or magazine.
(PSSST! Hey, Candace, could we interest you in a position with a going-places hyper-local online news outfit?)
I've read Candace's short story (and so can you). It's an enigmatic tale of psychic torment and deceit, reminiscent of Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart". (But a lot less wordy.)
