How about a high-five for the Plano-based snack company that manages to get itself into the news every Super Bowl season with some kind of promotion that fills space during these dry holiday times, which is not to say that there aren't plenty of crazy crime sprees going on but more that people are on vacation and thus become desperate for any kind of filler, even if and when it comes to a press release from a chip maker.
Bringing us to Tostitos' heroic honoring of a college football team, dredged up from the 50s. The University of San Francisco Dons were invited to play the Bowl but college football wasn't so integrated and they would've had to leave their African-American teammates behind and so they decided not to play and thus exemplified the true meaning of "team spirit" (following the lead of Tostitos there, who put "team spirit" in quotes). Sadly, the team then went broke and the university had to drop its football program, but they made a stand, see, and so they'll get a halftime tribute during Fiesta bowl, done Tostitos-style.
Speaking of, check out this recipe:
Quick Chili Cheese Dip
1 pound lean hamburger
1 - 15 1/2-ounce jar TOSTITOS® brand Restaurant Style Salsa Con Queso
1 - 16-ounce jar TOSTITOS® brand All-Natural Salsa
1 - 15-ounce can dark red kidney beans, drained
1/2 cup thinly sliced scallions
Directions
In large skillet over medium heat, cook hamburger, breaking it up with spatula into small pieces. When hamburger is browned, stir in Salsa Con Queso, All-Natural Salsa, and kidney beans. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer 5 minutes. Pour into a serving bowl, sprinkle with scallions, and serve with TOSTITOS® Tortilla Chips.
