UPDATED: City of Dallas making nice money off 17 red light cameras

NBC5 reports the city of Dallas is making some nice money so far on the cameras it has installed already: $131,000 in two weeks with 12 cameras. At that rate, reports NBC5, the city can make $3.5 million in a year. Using my calculator, I figured it to be 3,406,000. I won't quibble, just pointing out the difference. Ah hell, I'm quibbling.

Don't like red light cameras? Check out the National Motorists Association, which has a lot of information to make your day.

Do like red light cameras? Check out the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which has a lot of information to make your day.

On our neighborhood pages, we've got the red light intersections mapped out in each hood. They're plotted on the maps, but we suppressed them from the story lists so they wouldn't overrun the city -- like the red light cameras have.

UPDATE: Frank J. Librio, spokesman for the city of Dallas, just passed along camera sites now up and running to date. There are 17, not 12. I've left them bunched together in the three groups, which is how they were sent to us:

We also got a list of potential sites that the city is considering installing cameras, which are listed below. By April 27, Dallas intends to have 60 camera sites operational.

Writes Librio in an email: "Some intersections on the list may be disqualified because there could be potential problems installing the equipment once they get out there – If that is the case, PWT (Public Works and Transportation) will find another intersection to install that particular camera. It is safe to say that the list does represent intersections that according to crash data have the highest number of red light accidents in the city."

Found a way around all this via a Google ad appearing on the story:

I'm not recommending or endorsing. Just pointing it out as a company trying to stick it to the man.

The big city is following the burbs. Soon Mockingbird, Abrams and Buckner will be toll roads and local businesses will landscape with dead plants.

Heh. I live off Buckner. If it becomes a toll road, I suspect that it (at least the area around I-30) will become an Escape from New York-esque wasteland.
