Fort Worth teacher disciplined for showing film on slavery

Amistad may have earned several Oscar nominations but it was still rated R.

Ridglea Hills Elementary School teacher Larue Washington was disciplined for showing portions of R-rated Amistad to fifth-grade students. She used the film as part of a lesson on slavery, including a scene with a stabbing.

Washington, who has taught for 27 years, was disciplined for failing to follow school board policy, which prohibits showing any portions of an R-rated movie, "no matter what segment of the movie is being shown," according to the Star-Telegram.

Amistad follows the journey of 53 black slaves held in a Spanish slave ship named La Amistad. Hopefully, the students were not subjected to any scenes with Matthew McConaughey, whose contract seems to require that he be allowed to take his shirt off within the first 10 minutes of every movie he's in.

Rated R is under 17 not allowed without parent.

If parents did not approve this, the teacher got what she deserved.

Kids should see this movie, but the parent has rights here. The teacher meant good but acted foolishly.

I wouldn't be mad as a parent, but I would have the right to be.
