Gypsy Tea Room closing end of March, despite scuttlebutt to the contrary
COPYRIGHT 2007 PEGASUS NEWS, INC. Despite rumors to the contrary, the Gypsy Tea Room will be closing on Mar. 31, as previously announced.
As reported by numerous sources including CBS 11 (with a "blasting" from The Observer's Robert Wilonsky), the club has filed for bankruptcy, with a closing date set for the end of March. But rumors started circulating that the club would close even sooner. One even surfaced as a comment from a member of the Pegasus community, who'd heard from a supplier that the club was closed already.
The supplier, who asked not to be identified, backtracked slightly, saying only that he'd "heard from other businesses in the area" that the club might close this weekend.
An employee at Deep Ellum Cafe, with which the Gypsy shares management, said the club would still be open.
Also, a representative from Charles Attall management officially confirmed that the club will stay open for all scheduled shows through March 31st. The rep also wanted to make clear that all shows previously scheduled to take place at Gypsy in April and beyond will still be happening at other various venues around the DFW area.
Shows at the GTR this weekend include Yonder Mountain String Band tonight, and two separate shows on Saturday: a singer-songwriter bill headlined by Dave Barnes in the Tea Room, and Sparklehorse in the Ballroom. There'll also be a Super Bowl viewing party in the Ballroom on Sunday.

Sam points out that any attempts to bring back the GTR, at least as we know it, will be futile with Charles Attal committed to HOB. Good point:

I think GTR isn't the only Dallas venue that will be affected by the new HOB ...

Some of the shows scheduled for April and May at GTR have been officially moved to the Granada Theater:

This post comes with some good news about the Granada, which has apparently been bought and paid for, not leased, by Mike Schoder. Hopefully it's a sign that this venue will not fall as so many others have recently.
