Texas lawmakers call on Perry to take the vaccine back
Republican State Sen. Jane Nelson of Flower Mound urged Gov. Rick Perry to take back his executive order mandating vaccinations for girls against a sexually transmitted cancer that causes cervical cancer.
Nelson, who is chairwoman of the health and human services committee, suggested soliciting opinions from doctors, scientists, and patients first.
Perry's order to require the vaccine for girls as young as 11 has stirred up the ant-pile, with questions raised about his personal ties to Merck, the vaccine's manufacturer.
Several Republican lawmakers spoke out against the vaccine, including Republican State Sen. Glenn Hegar of Katy, Republican State Rep. Dan Flynn, from Van, Republican state Rep. Jim Keffer of Eastland, and Rep. Dan Flynn of Canton, and some are filing bills to roll it back.
Even Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst pulled a surprising Benedict Arnold, saying he didn't think the government should get involved.
