The McKinney North High School Cross-Examination Debate team recently captured 1st place in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Cross-Examination District Meet held at Frisco Centennial High School on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

The McKinney North Cross Examination Debate Team, consisting of Siddhartha Singh and Craig Bell, advanced to the UIL State Cross-Examination Debate meet to be held at the University of Texas in Austin, March 12 through 17.

“These students are extremely dedicated to the skills of Debate and worked together in the best team effort I have seen in policy debate,” said Phyllis Welch, McKinney North Debate Coach. “Sid is groomed in National Forensic League Cross Examination and helped train Craig who came in as a Lincoln-Douglas debater. Together they exude confidence and maturity in the skills of defense and debate and both are helping to build a strong program here at North.”

The UIL academic contests range from social studies to accounting and from computer science to poetry interpretation. More than 2.2 million students participate in UIL competition annually.

Through participating in the UIL Academic State Meet, Singh and Bell qualify for Texas Interscholastic League Foundation scholarships. Phyllis Welch coaches the McKinney North High School Debate Team.
