UTA freshmen plant seeds for war-torn Afghanistan
Kids doing what they can, one eggplant at a time.
The University of Texas at Arlington student organization Freshman Leaders on Campus (FLOC) is taking donations of flower and vegetable seeds to send to Afghanistan as part of a project called “Seeds for Afghanistan.”
The project was inspired by the book, The Kite Runner, a novel about Afghanistan, which all freshmen are studying, discussing and writing about in their first-semester English composition classes as part of the University’s first shared reading experience, a program called OneBook.
FLOC has placed boxes for donations in various locations around campus through Feb. 19. “Seeds for Afghanistan” is offered through the non-profit organization Afghans4Tomorrow. Common plants that can grow in Afghanistan include eggplants, tomatoes, radishes, onions, scallions, lettuce, spinach, carrots, cilantro, thyme, rosemary, basil, marigolds, sunflowers, strawflowers, pinks, daisies and zinnias.
FLOC requests seeds that are less than a year old and that grow in Zone 4, which can be found on the backs of seed packages. Collection boxes can be found on the first floor of the Life Science Building, University Hall, Fine Arts Building, Davis Hall, Science Hall and the E. H. Hereford University Center (southwest entrance).
