Parents sue Gov. Perry over HPV vaccine
Parents of three girls have sued Gov. Rick Perry to protect their daughters from inoculation with a vaccine against human papilloma virus, reports Courthouse News (by way of Burnt Orange Report).
The parents claim that Perry's executive order requiring girls in sixth grade and above to be vaccinated before they can enroll in public school is illegal.
Perry's Feb. 2 order has raised protests from numerous camps, from conservatives who say that the vaccine encourages more sex, to anti-government types who don't like their behavior to be legislated. His relationship to vaccine-maker Merck has also been questioned.
This follows a bill that's making its way through the Texas House of Representatives to overturn Perry's order, which passed its first vote yesterday by the House Commitee on Public Health, which approved the measure to stop the state from requiring the shots for 11 and 12 year-old girls. The bill is headed to the full House for a vote.
