The North Texas women’s basketball team had its two-game winning streak snapped in its final regular season game by Louisiana-Lafayette 75-59 at the Earl K. Long Gym in Lafayette, La. The Ragin Cajuns, the West Division champions, pounded North Texas (9-19, 6-12) on the boards with 27 offensive rebounds that resulted in 28 second chance points for Louisiana-Lafayette.

North Texas enters the Sun Belt Conference Tournament as the No. 9 seed and will face South Alabama on the road.

“They really made things tough for us on the glass today and you have to give them credit because they kept battling,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “I still feel good about the way that we are playing and I’m looking forward to our game with South Alabama”.

North Texas had three players score in double figures as Amber Jackson, Sanetra Jackson, and freshman Brittney James each had 12 points apiece.

The Cajuns (23-7, 14-4) slowly built up its lead throughout the first half. With only 3.8 seconds remaining in the first half Yolanda Jones nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the Cajuns into the break with an eight-point lead at 39-31.

Louisiana-Lafayette worked the lead up to 16 points at 64-48 on a 3-pointer by Alicia McDaniel with 10:25 remaining. North Texas could not get the lead down to single digits in the second half as two Cajuns ended the game with double-doubles. Jones had 26 points and 15 rebounds while Sonora Edwards had 15 points and 13 rebounds.

North Texas begins the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday February 28 at South Alabama.
