Developer near Princeton mistakenly drains lake

— A developer building one more fancy housing development near Princeton got the neighbors in a tizzy about the plight of fish, birds, and bobcats when it drained a lake by more than five feet.

Built for flood control by the federal government, the lake sat undisturbed for 50 years. But when Igi Development of started construction, the water level started dropping.

lgi Development did get permission from the Collin County Soil and Water conservation district and the USDA to lower the lake but did not obtain a water rights permit from the state. The firm was ordered to stop draining the lake and could still face fines.

"If we don't get the seasonal rains, which we should have, but haven't got the last two years, we're going to have the same situation. This thing is going to dry up and the fish will be gone," clucked area homeowner Doyce Chapman to the DMN.

"What am I going to do for the next few years if we don't get the rain? What about the wildlife and the bobcats that come down? All the birds and the hawks and everything?" chirped area homeowner Judy Buckner.
